Las curtidurías se situaron a orillas del Río Fes desde la Edad Media para aprovechar los efectos limpiadores de una corriente que arrastra fuera de la ciudad todas las inmundicias de la medina y los residuos de una de las industrias más íntimamente ligadas a la historia de Fez . Aquí se labró, durante siglos, gran parte del prestigio comercial de la ciudad santa de Marruecos. Las tenerías de Chouwara son las más antiguas de la urbe y, según los propios artesanos que trabajan las finas pieles bereberes, las más importantes de todo el norte de África. Esta complicada maraña de pocetas donde se curten y tintan los pellejos de dromedario, vaca, oveja y cabra se construyeron en el siglo XIII y, desde entonces, son el epicentro de una de las actividades artesanales de mayor peso para la actividad comercial fesí.
