The Ouaïème ferry is the last ferry of its kind in New Caledonia. In the absence of a bridge, it allows people to cross the Ouaïème river's mouth 7 days a week and 24 hours a day to reach Hienghène located 11.8mi (19km) further south. The cars are placed on a floating platform guided by one of the three boatmen who take turns to operate the ferry.
