Approaching the old town of Joigny
Sailing on the Yonne river to Joigny allows the tourists to admire the construction of the old town on the limestone promontory of the Pays d'Othe's cuesta (coast). A privileged site for the installation of the Gondi fortified castle which ensured the defense of the place as well as the surveillance of its accesses, it is overviewed by the neighboring Saint-Jean church. Located on Place Saint-Jean, in the upper town, this 13th century church in Gothic style at its base but Renaissance in its upper parts is the most visible monument in this photo thanks to the blue roof of its bell-tower.
