An irregular staircase

The entrance gate to Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is decorated with the coats of arms of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The German Emperor, at the origin of the restoration of 1900, wanted to affirm the affiliation of his lineage to the great German dynasties. A staircase with wide and irregular steps provides access to the apartments. A final defense consists of a drawbridge crossing the Lions Gate. Unlike the fixed bridge, which is stationary, it raises by pivoting on one end. Its counterweight mechanism can still be seen at the back of the door.
