The protection of the castle of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois allowed from the 12th century the creation of a village whose inhabitants have the particularity of having been freed as early as April 1267 by the Lord Jean III of Châteauneuf. These 'francs bourgeois de Châteauneuf' benefited from a charter granting them freedom from mortmain, formariage and servitude and were freed from tax at will. Subject to a fixed annual royalty on the land and no longer on the person, they got richer than elsewhere.
