Kaiser Wilhelm II decided to renovate the ruins of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle in 1900. The first part of the citadel to be restored was the keep. The emperor wanted it to be the emblem of his power, symbolized by the imperial eagle with outstretched wings attached to its summit in 1906. The south facade and the apartments it shelters were also thoroughly renovated. In 1936, the Haut-Koenigsbourg served as the setting for Jean Renoir's movie La Grande Illusion (The Great Illusion) with actor Jean Gabin. The fortress, spared during the Second World War, continued to be used for shooting movies.
