Brittany and Normandy still quarrel over Mont-Saint-Michel! Situated at the estuary of the Couesnon, with one bank in Brittany and the other in Normandy, the Mont has changed regions many times over the years. Initially a part of Brittany, it became Norman in 1204. However, a popular Breton saying goes: “the Couesnon in its madness has put the Mont in Normandy but once it regains its senses the Mont will become Breton again...” In any case, both regions contributed financially to the desilting of the bay.
