The name of Koenigsbourg (king's castle) appears as early as 1157. Its history is closely related to that of Europe. In the 15th century, it was under the control of the Thiersteins, a noble Alsatian family from Switzerland. During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes, opposed to the Habsburgs, ravaged Alsace and destroyed the castle. After the region became part of Germany, its ruins were offered to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1899. The Haut-Koenigsbourg returned to France in 1919, when Alsace-Moselle was restored after World War I.
