The pedestrian streets of old Troyes allow immersing into the medieval era of the city. Numerous fires destroyed a large number of its renowned half-timbered houses throughout history. That of 1524 caused a profound trauma in the city. It led to the destruction of 1,500 to 1,600 homes and the death of 3,000 inhabitants. The merchant bourgeoisie district and the food reserves also disappeared. In the 50s and 60s, a craze led to the renovation of these landmarks from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
